About Us

The Daughters of Mary Immaculate (Marianist Sisters) are an international religious congregation founded in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Our founders, Blessed Adele de Batz de Trenquelleon and Blessed William Joseph Chaminade believed that building small communities of faith was the best way to reinvigorate the Church, educate in faith and transform society.

Our Core Values

COMMUNITY
We live in communities, enlivened by faith and in partnership with Mary, to extend her mission to give Christ to the world.
"The first mission of the community is to create the vital environment that allows us to experience God and communicate it."
(Rule of Life, I.42)
"It is the Lord who brings us together to live the same vocation. In the midst of a world divided by hatred and sin, our community reveals that it is Christ who realizes our communion and helps us to live with joy and love. Our community life, a sign of his presence, thus prepares the coming of a new world."

(Rule of Life, I.40)
FAITH
Cultivating a strong faith permeates the whole of life for Marianists.
"By the profession of the evangelical counsels we commit ourselves to follow Christ, to be transformed into His likeness, to work in the Church for the coming of His Kingdom, and thus to strive together for the fullness of charity."
(Rule of Life, I.2)
"Like our Founders, we desire to live by faith. Contemplating how God is at work in the world and in human hearts, we gradually become women of faith who see the realities of our times with the eyes of God."
(Rule of Life, I.5)
PRAYER
Marianists give a privileged place to personal meditation and communal prayer.
"Prayer, the heart of our religious, personal, community, and apostolic life, allows us to enter into union with Jesus Christ and to experience His love for the Father and for all people. It enlivens us for mission. In a world thirsting for productivity, gratuitous prayer is the sign of the absolute priority of God in our lives."
(Rule of Life, I.52)
"The liturgy, the source and summit of the life of the Church, occupies an essential place in the life of the community."
(Rule of Life, I.54)
ACTION
Our life of community and prayer impels us to action. Sisters are engaged in various ministries, committees, and projects educating in faith, building community and seeking justice in collaboration with the Marianist Family and other organizations.
"By the will of our founders, we are essentially missionaries."
(Rule of Life, I.64)
"Basically, the Congregation is open to all forms of ministry. Faithful to the vision of our Founders we choose preferably those ministries which favor 'the multiplication of Christians,' awaken faith faith, allow us to form communities of Christians and apostles, and are more particularly concerned with youth and the poor."
(Rule of Life, I.67)

The Marianist Family

The Marianist Family is composed of four coequal branches: a lay movement (an "international public association of the faithful lay people"), a secular institute, and two religious congregations (one of women and one of men). The identity of the Marianist family is marked by the influence of Mary who says to each of us, "Do whatever he tells you." Each member of the Marianist Family commits to collaborate with Mary to offer Christ to the world and make his presence known. The branches of the Marianist Family share in this mission as equal partners while each branch maintains the specificity of their vocation and state in life.
